“Tariff Relief Portal” Sites: What’s Real and What’s a Scam Right Now

    August 22, 2026
Sites and services branding themselves as a tariff relief portal deserve genuine caution right now, not automatic trust, given the significant wave of tariff-related scams that cybersecurity researchers have documented amid real, ongoing confusion around U.S. tariff policy. Before engaging with any site promising tariff relief, refunds, or assistance, it’s worth understanding both the actual current legal situation and the specific pattern scammers have been exploiting.
The genuine backdrop driving this confusion is real: the Supreme Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the broad tariffs imposed under it, creating a legitimate question about whether businesses and consumers who paid those tariffs are owed refunds. However, current law does not provide an automatic refund mechanism for affected businesses or individuals, meaning there is no simple, official online portal where someone can currently claim an automatic tariff refund.
In response to this gap, members of Congress introduced legislation, including a bill called the RELIEF Act, specifically to require U.S. Customs and Border Protection to automatically refund certain tariffs collected under this now-invalidated authority. As of this writing, this remains proposed legislation that has not been enacted into law, meaning no automatic government refund process currently exists, regardless of what any third-party website might imply or claim.
This exact gap between genuine public confusion and the absence of any actual simple refund mechanism is precisely the environment scammers have been exploiting. Cybersecurity researchers tracking this specific issue identified roughly 300 tariff-related scam domain registrations, with fraudulent sites and messages designed to look official, sometimes using names referencing U.S. Customs or tariff authorities, attempting to collect payment or personal information from confused consumers and business owners.
Common scam patterns specifically documented around this issue include fake delivery notices claiming a package requires tariff payment before release, phishing messages posing as government agencies requesting personal or financial information under the guise of processing a tariff refund, and websites designed to look official that request upfront fees or personal information in exchange for supposedly expediting a tariff relief claim.
A genuinely important fact worth understanding clearly: tariffs are legally paid by importing companies, not directly by individual consumers at the point of a typical purchase or package delivery, meaning any message asking an individual consumer to personally pay a tariff fee directly, particularly for a package already received, should be treated with immediate, serious skepticism regardless of how official the message or associated website appears.
For any business that believes it may be owed a genuine tariff refund following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the appropriate and safe path involves working directly through official channels, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s own official processes and, where the situation genuinely warrants it, consulting a qualified trade attorney or customs broker rather than any third-party website promising simplified relief or expedited refund processing for a fee.
For any consumer or business owner who encounters a specific site calling itself a tariff relief portal, treating it with the same caution warranted for any unsolicited financial offer is appropriate: avoid providing payment information or sensitive personal details, verify any claims independently through official government sources rather than the site’s own claims, and consult the Better Business Bureau or similar independent consumer protection resources before engaging further with any such site.
Given the current absence of any actual automatic government tariff refund mechanism, combined with documented, active scam activity specifically targeting this exact area of public confusion, the most protective approach for now is treating any tariff relief portal claiming to offer simplified refunds or assistance with genuine skepticism, verifying independently through CBP.gov or a qualified trade professional rather than through the site itself.
This situation is also likely to keep evolving, given the pending legislative proposal and continued public attention on the underlying tariff ruling, so checking official government sources periodically for genuine updates, rather than relying on a single check performed once, remains a sensible practice for anyone with a genuine financial stake in how this situation ultimately develops.
